Magento Users Guide: An Overview For Beginners

Setting up an online store is similar to setting up a store in the real world in a lot of ways and the sections in the admin section of Magento reflect that. The admin section contains features for you to do marketing of the store-‘online marketing/social media marketing’., fill it with the requisite products-‘add products online’, and control payment and orders-‘payment acceptance on website’ for the goods purchased. You need to categorise the store in a way that the customers can easily find the required goods-‘online product categorization and search’. Magento makes all these features required in the online store extremely easy to edit and configure. We will see how to add all these features in a step-by step approach.

Once Magento has been installed, you can login from any where you have an internet connection. On logging in the first thing you will see is the the dashboard which is the front page of Magento. Initially this will not contain any products.

1. Dashboard

You can go to the admin part by typing admin after the URL and it will take you to admin login page seen above. Here you have to enter the username and password. Once logged in you will see the following screen.

This is the dashboard and any operation in the backend can be done from this page. The first thing we will begin to do is add products.

If we take an example and pretend we are setting up an online book store and look at what all operations have to be done to create a successful online book store. We start by adding a few simple products. Before even adding products we have to think how to ‘Categorise’ the products. The initial categories should have been which stated in the design and already prefilled in the admin section. New categories can be created through the Categories section in the admin, but may require development assistance to get them to display on the front page. Correct classification is really important to help reduce time spent in searching for the products and ensure people can find them. If you do need to add new categories then first go to Catalog and click Manage categories

We then add a new subcategory. If it is the first product we will enter the basic information and see how the product is processed within Magento. Enter Name. Change Is Active to yes. Add a basic description in description. Finally save category.

Add Products

After ensuring that there are categories, the next stage is to add products. We can add a simple product and you’ll be able to see it updated in your online store. First go to dashboard and under Catalog click ‘manage products’.
